Quote of the Day

Her full nature…. spent itself in channels which had no great name on the earth. But the effect of her being on those around her was incalculably diffusive: for the growing good of the world is partly dependant on unhistoric acts; and that things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been, is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life, and rest in unvisited tombs.

George Eliot, Middlemarch about Dorothea

Reminds me of the passage in The Great Divorce which you’ve occasionally quoted about the woman who seems like a radiant divine being when Lewis meets her in heaven but who was little-known on earth, and whose life was characterised by her genuine goodness to all she encountered. Or something along those lines.

Yes, I think that it is like that. I like it for both its modesty and the importance of people who are unsung but actually real heroes.
