Tommy Sheridan and Andy Coulson – It’s all so confusing

Tommy & Gail Sheridan plus Lawyer

I was listening to radio 5 live at lunchtime today and got very confused. I thought I was listening to Prime Minister’s questions on when suddenly they switched to the statement by the wife of the Scottish Socialist Tommy Sheridan. And I was wondering was this really part of prime Minister’s questions with the opportunity of outside questions.

Now that would be rather neat wouldn’t it? Because most of the questions normally asked seemed to be of the 1st year debating society type don’t they?

But back to Tommy Sheridan and his wife Mrs Sheridan (an odd thought but don’t true socialists believe that marriage is patriarchal and that the wife should have have her own name?). She was quoted on the radio saying this:

The real reason why he’s been imprisoned today is because he has fought injustice and inequality with every beat of his heart.

Now there was me thinking that Tommy Sheridan had been imprisoned today because he perjured himself. Perjury being the case when you lie in court. He had told a previous court that he hadn’t committed adultery and won a large sum of money off a newspaper that said that he had.I thought that this was because it was found by a court that he actually had committed adultery.

Now I thought that the most damming statement was this one

And she led the politician and former Celebrity Big Brother contestant’s family, friends and comrades in a one-fisted salute as he was led, handcuffed to the cells.

Celebrity Big Brother? take him away. Surely they could have sentenced him back to the house or repeat the performance of George Galloway

So why had it interrupted Prime Ministers questions time? I was confused but then it was revealed.

In a statement read out by Mr Anwar [Mr Sheridan’s lawyer], Sheridan said: “Andy Coulson may have resigned for the second time but if he and others are not above the law then it is time that they faced justice.”

Ed milliband looking weird

Ed Milliband

So Ed Milliband having done such a rubbish job in Prime Minister’s questions today had been replaced by Tommy Sheridan’s lawyer. It all suddenly made sense.

Yes, Will – it does all sound terribly confusing. Even more so when you lost me when you talked about “true socialists” (however that is defined) believing that marriage was patriarchal and that the wife should have her own name. I’m sure that it was tongue in cheek, but still somewhat of a put down for those who believe in socialism…….and also for the thousands of wives (or unmarried partners) – of many political persuasions – who choose to keep their own surnames. And you finish by saying that Ed Milliband had done a “rubbish job” today. It’s beginning to sound like a Daily Mail editorial!

George if I had written this with the Tories (or evangelicals) in my sites would you have said that it was a “put down”?
Also find me someone who listened to PMQ’s yesterday and believed that Ed Milliband wasn’t rubbish when he had so much material to question the government with. He didn’t land any blows on Cameron – even the Guardian was disappointed with his performance.

Well Will, maybe that’s what you get for listening to Radio 5 Live… Like George, I got all confused when I tuned in to this esteemed blog and found the usual broadcast interrupted by a rogue Mail report. ūüėČ

I’ve no idea if Ed Milliband put in a good PMQ performance or not and not altogether sure why it matters. Aren’t we supposed to be moving beyond the era of Punch & Judy politics…?

Well said, Harvey. And Will – in answer to your question – you misunderstand me if you think I am just defending the ‘left’. The point I was trying to make was that what you wrote was both inaccurate and unfair. If you had said something similarly unfair about the ‘right’ I would have also commented – honestly – believe me – I would. And I guess I just don’t like descriptions of anyone trying to do their best as ‘rubbish’. It really is quite aggressive and very judgemental, especially in print.

I agree with the comments made above. There is a very clear confusion in the difference between ‘pure’ ??? socialism and feminism. How many capitalist women choose to keep their own name both in the public and not so public eye ? How many socialist women choose to take the surname of their spouses? You were right in your statement, Minister – that it was a confusing thought that you had and utterly inaccurate. On signing the marriage register both parties sign their single surnames. They leave the place of contract and often the woman takes her spouse’s name. It is not a legal requirement but one that many women have been conditioned to accept and in some cases prove to be a good and loving decision for them to make but in others not so. It looks as though she has forgiven him (possibly not the first nor last time) his lies and deceit. Lying to court is punishable by imprisonment – how revealing it would be if lying outside it carried the same punishment!!
And, incidentally, my daughter who has a first class honours degree in Literary Studies, plus one of my students who is studying for a Masters, tell me that the once liberal Guardian is now written largely by students and has a right wing bias. One says the Mirror is the only socialist paper left (pun! sorry!!), good for sport coverage apparently but not one to buy if one is politically and personally averse to ‘page 3’s.
