Star Signs all wrong says Professor – Shock!

Professor Parke Kunkle zodiac signs wrong

Professor Parke Kunkle

Great angst on the blogophere. It seems that, shock horror, the zodiac signs are all wrong!!!

An astronomy professor from Minneapolis has pointed out that the sky has changed in the last few thousand years and that therefore the zodiac is wrong. See his explanation on the BBC.

Associated Press quote one worried person in Miami

MIAMI – Sofia Whitcombe began her day with the startling realization that she might not be exactly who she thought she was.

“My whole life, I thought I was a Capricorn,” the 25-year-old publicist said. “Now I’m a Sagittarius? I don’t feel like a Sagittarius!” It felt, she said, like a rug had been pulled from under her feet.

“Will my personality change?” she mused. “Capricorns are diligent and regimented, and super-hard-working like me. Sagittarians are more laid back. This is all a little off-putting.”

Must admit that I’ve never been into the zodiac stuff. In my first year after university I shared a house with a couple of girls who would religiously read their star signs and even went and paid for their star sign to be read.

I tried to be nice. Truly I did. I moved out.

Saint Augustine pointed out in the 4th century that he and his slave were born on the same day and were totally different in status and character.

So I found it mildly humorous that this professor points out that the star signs have been moving over the centuries.

The danger, for me, of star signs is that they seem to pre-determine your personality and your character. It seems to me that this can all too easily lead either that a) everything is pre-determined and I can’t do anything and/or b) That my character is largely set and I can’t change it.

All too easily it is the way of having cheap spirituality. Spirituality that doesn’t really challenge you to make a difference in the world.

Still. I shan’t convince anyone and I am sure that the good professor is unlikely to either.

Video of the good professor here.

No way!! I can’t believe it!! That’s ruined the whole spiritual basis of my entire life!

Star signs make me laugh. I don’t see them as dangerously occult, just plain daft. Why on earth anyone would imagine that the apparent relative positions of objects millions of miles away would exert any influence at all over their personal lives beats me, but I guess it shows we can’t help looking for meaning and significance even if in completely the wrong places.

Harvey, I agree that star signs in themselves are slightly ridiculous but beware the thin end of the wedge! Will’s flatmates went from horoscopes to personal readings. What next, Tarot? Palms? Ouija boards? All firmly in the occult category as I can personally testify. Proud to boast that my kids didn’t know their starsign until high school(ish) age. Good thing too as it appears they would have been wrong anyway!
