World Cup

‘Nuff said – I’ve said all I’m going to say here and here.

Update (sorry I couldn’t resist)

TWO votes.

Update 2

From Guardian website:

After much discussion about the British media’s role hurting the 2018 bid. David Tiltman emails:

Here’s a ranking of today’s bidding countries according to where they appear on the current Press Freedom Index:

Netherlands (3)/Belgium (14)
Japan (12)
Australia (18)
England (19 as part of UK)
USA (20)
Spain (39)/Portugal (40)
South Korea (42)
Qatar (120)
Russia (140)

Interesting, given Fifa’s issues with the press recently

Update 3 – Final one

Humorous take on the Daily Mash:

As Fifa president Sepp Blatter announced Russia as hosts of the 2018 event, the Football Association stressed that next time it would simply hand out jiffy bags stuffed with crisp £50 notes along with the implicit threat of certain death.

Its an absolute disgrace! Russia is, by their on journalists admission, a very corrupt country. and it’s VERY big, so travelling will be a nightmare!

    QATAR!!!!! unbelievable!

the average temperature in June in Qatar is well over 100 degrees! that’s ok though coz they are going to air condition all the stadiums! WOT???? so far from what the rest of the world is trying to do on carbon emissions it is untrue (well unless they are just using solar power) incidentely credit to the Netherlands/Belgium bid for their environmental credentials.

Be interesting if Israel qualify, because Qatar doesn’t allow Jewish people into its country!

oh and it’s lucky that there are no openly homosexual footballers, because it is ILLEGAL to be homosexual in Qatar!!!

AND there is no alcohol!! might have escaped FIFA’s notice but football fans quite often like a beer! 🙂

The problem is that we should have withdrawn our bid earlier and gone for FIFA then. Now it just looks like sour grapes. One can only hope that the IOC demand that FIFA clean up its act – but will it? The most the IOC can do is suspend them from the Olympics – hardly a dent on their cash generating mountain.

The issue isn’t even, really, Russia it is FIFA itself – it needs to be more open and transparent about its criteria. If they said they only want new countries to apply or that they would rate 50% of the amount then at least it would be clean and clear – it is neither!

    In any case – Qatar!!!

Qatar have cleared up the Israel (i was wrong about Jews not being allowed into Qatar it is Israelis) and alcohol questions. Bet they must really hope that Israel don’t improve though!

Now just the homosexuality issue and the climate to solve!
