The terrible cynic in me says that the strapline could equally say: “Now go forth and feel and act like the random accident that you are”
Of course I don’t believe that, but the data could be read either way – it’s then a matter of faith which version we choose.
Also, as a mathematical quibble, the odds very much depend on what point in the chain of events you’re starting from…
Of course, I agree, it depends on what point in the chain you start. You could as easily go further back and use the view of “what are the chances of anything at all existing”. The statistics are even worse then! The real quibble would be the approximation stats he uses – but then hey, its fun!
To get around the enormity of the statistics some scientists are talking of the multiverse (such as Stephen Hawkings) – allowing an infinite number of universes so that anything could happen.
